1. Blanket Scarf- God's gift to the scarf world. I mean a blanket disguised as a scarf?!? What more could you want?
2. Cozy boots- not suede because seriously, I've never met a suede boot that survived the slushy ohio weather have you? Talk about wet cold feet. Leather, faux leather, rubber, really embrace a more athleisure flair this winter if possible!
3. Fleece Leggings- I KNOW! These actually exist and they are AMAZING. Just stop what your doing immediately and go find them.
4. Vests- LAYERS LAYERS LAYERS- I personally hate layers, but I do live in Cleveland, Ohio so I've had to do a ton of personal market research as to what kind of layering I do like! It's mostly vest related or tall boots layered over leggings. Don't be afraid to go to stores and try on EVERYTHING to find out what works for you. Just ignore those fitting room attendant death gazes.
5. Cozy Sweaters- I will also be the first person to tell you how much I hate sweaters. haha I know what you are thinking why are you writing this? Because actually I'm the perfect person to be writing this. If I can find comfortable ways to stay warm and stylish when I hate the majority of winter clothing you can too! If you find sweaters to be itchy and annoying, don't give up! Look for cotton sweaters or fabric blends on the tag! OR invest in some cuddle duds. They are just as great as they sound.
DISCLAIMER: When temps/windchill are Below 0. Let me be the first person to give you permission to just survive out there in the vicious wilderness, I mean trip to Target for survival essentials. No one will be looking at what you are wearing besides your 5 hats and 20 scarves you layered on :) WE ALL UNDERSTAND. Mutual fashion understanding and unwritten rules
Stay Warm Friends!
You know what sucks? Being told continually time and time again that you aren't good enough, that you should be ashamed of yourself. Not smart enough. Not thin enough. Not short enough. Not tall enough. Not loud enough. Not quiet enough. Not fast enough. Not talented enough. Not pretty enough. Not whatever enough.
******I just want to start out this year telling you, you are enough. Especially in this month of January when the whole wide world tells you you need to be more of who you aren't.
Now don't get me wrong, never stop thriving for greatness, those dreams and the new year is a great time to set goals but never let anyone tell you that you are not enough because shaming others has never boosted anyone's confidence to go out and conquer their dreams and thrive for greatness. We are all human and not perfect. Remember this as you create those goals for the year.
Having goals is great for giving you that mindfulness needed to accomplish things!!! Mindfulness is your BFF. But if you fail, if that one day your goals have to change due to taking care of yourself, a sick child, or anything of more importance. Don't shame yourself. Don't get discouraged. You are enough. Pick up the next day with your goals or the day after. You are not a failure. You are human. Everyday can not be perfectly planned as we desire it to be.
I have been struggling with what to write this week as I continue to seek out and hone in on what I want this blog/business to become as I search for clarity. I realized I don't need to know 100% what this year needs to look like as long as I am moving forward and not listening to our shame culture. Don't let the world stand between you and your goals and don't let it's definition define whether you are enough for the world.
SO WHAT ARE MY GOALS/THEME THIS YEAR?
A lot of small things make up the big things. Personally and for my blog/business. As I opened up my brand new 2018 InkWell press planner this year (Yes it's even purple the Pantone color of the year!) the quote for the year in it reminded me exactly of this!!!
Forever is composed of nows. -Emily Dickinson
Couldn't be more appropriate for this year! Let's be mindful this year together & conquer our dreams. One moment at a time!
STOP right there! PUT DOWN that top. Walk away. And ask yourself these questions before you buy! It's like virtually taking part of me shopping with you this winter!
Now that Christmas is over, you know what that means! SALES, EVERYTHING MUST GO, 99% off!!!! Yes I love a great sale especially the after Christmas sales when every store is trying to get rid of everything and make room for resort wear! I've been dreaming of resort wear lately as I write this BUT before you start buying and filling your wardrobe full of new goodies, lets make sure you are spending those dollars wisely with pieces that will make the most impact & will help you create a plethora of options that you hardly can't wait to slip into every morning!
1. Is it comfortable? Is it something that you are going to want to rip off as soon as you get home from work or that party? Drop the top. Everyone has different comfort levels and these are REALLY important to consider because let's be honest, if you don't find it mostly comfortable, if that fabric feels like sand paper or those pants are falling down and riding up all day you are not going to reach for them when you open those closet doors.
2. Are you only buying it cause it is 1000% off? or because it is a fancy fashion brand that is 200,000% off??? Marketing ploys are so effective sometimes. It's like pieces are practically free or you are even losing money by not buying them right?! Wrong. When you are buying a new piece for your wardrobe, always consider cost per wear before buying it. It might not be so inexpensive or your money might be better spent on that piece you are going to wear 100 times but is full price. Estimated Cost per wear= Cost of piece / how many times you wear it. Yes even stylists likes math.
3. Quality? Is it only on sale cause it is already falling apart? OR a step away from collapsing into a million pieces? Put it back or if you have fallen madly in love with the piece consider the cost/time it will take you to get it fixed or have yourself fix it to get it up to parr.
4. Is it trendy but not you? Put it back. You don't have to be fashionable/trendy to be well dressed. Let me explain. A lot of the most famous fashion icons were well dressed because they knew what trends were for them and which weren't. They knew who they were and that is what made them well dressed.
5. Do you need it? Sure you love this top, but do you already have the same one at home? If so either vow to get rid of the one in your closet as soon as you walk in your humble abode or put back the one at the store unless of course it is a basic/ staple piece you plan on wearing all the time like a black v-neck tee etc.
May the odds be ever in your favor!
So whats the deal with these capsule wardrobes? With the New Year coming up you are definitely not going to be able to escape the 5000 pins of capsule wardrobes on Pinterest, they can be helpful if you know how to translate them all. HERE'S HOW!
OH first though...What is a capsule wardrobe? If you scroll Pinterest at all you'll often see a cute graphic full of classic pieces of clothing and accessories with a hint of flair with a title that says make 5000 outfits out of 25 pieces! OK so maybe it's more like 50 outfits but you get the point. Capsule Wardrobe's are a way of honing in on pieces that will give you the most bang for your buck and in return focus on adding pieces that will bring life and more options to your closet!
Let's switch gears for one second. I promise only a second. REALLY.
I've always loved planning and organizing future plans but this past year has been a great lesson in living in the day that is NOW. Nothing more nothing less. Enjoying each day while still being mindful of the future but not living in it or letting it consume you. Anyone else struggle to not live in the future? Sometimes I forget to stop and smell the roses per say. This is why capsule wardrobes are near and dear to my heart. They can save you time, money & keep that important mindset! Especially while filling the gaps in your repertoire. I mean what more could you want? TRIPLE PLAY. So, just like how it is easy to live in the future and want to be confined to what your plans may bring one day... capsule wardrobes should take on the same mindset. FLEXIBILITY.
Originally I was going to write about helping you decide whether a capsule wardrobe is even right for you but you can tailor a capsule wardrobe to fit any lifestyle! So YES a capsule wardrobe IS RIGHT FOR YOU.
I LOVE options and am very detail oriented. I love planners, containers made specifically for ornaments & my closet looks like a divine rainbow sorted by item type. So, I typically would not be a candidate for a capsule wardrobe. I have too many black pants/leggings/denim for the "traditional" capsule wardrobe they talk about on Pinterest but to me they are all very different from one another because of their unique detailing, leather leggings, regular leggings, black denim, joggers, distressed denim, non distressed, fleece leggings, moto leggings, etc. you get the point. I like leggings. ALOT. No shame here. They are God's gift to the fashion world.
All are staples to me though! BUT that does not mean I cannot utilize a capsule wardrobe and that certainly does not mean you need to instantly develop my love of black clothing and leggings. For me choosing a few to focus on each week is helpful obviously mixed with other bottoms! Your capsule can be 50 pieces or 150 pieces. Whatever works for you. We all lead different lifestyles that require a different amount of clothing. Use all the references as more of a guide than hard fast rules. This is the beauty of fashion, interpretation, like a fine painting.
AND remember don't be confined by a number find a number that works for you! Then from there create your capsule wardrobe. Everyone has a different number of clothing that doesn't overwhelm them. That really is the key to a capsule wardrobe. Not being overwhelmed by what is hanging there or nicely folded cause I mean I know NO ONE has a pile of clothes on that bench or chair that they can't make work... haha So this way in the morning, getting ready is easy breezy covergirl. So while my capsule wardrobe may not be standard it still saves me time and money every week and it can do the same for you!
HAVE A FABULOUS HOLI-YAY & HAPPY NEW YEAR CC'ers!
Goodbye APPENDIX & HELLO all of you lovely people!
I missed you & you & you & you!
Ahhhhh it's SO nice to be back. Being sick really burns you out but you already know that I'm sure, sometimes we just forget. I was trying so hard to ignore being sick for so long because I didn't feel like I had a good excuse to be feeling the way I was feeling but let me be the first person to give you permission to rest when you need to. Even if you don't know why you need a break, you owe it to yourself. You don't owe anyone an explanation. Take time for yourself, say NO to things. Embrace your inner three year old. They seem to have the whole no thing down. Saying no is one of the hardest things for me to do. How about you? I don't know about you but I hate cancelling on people or not being able to help. You can't give to others what you don't have to give in the first place though. Something to chew on. Try not to spit it out.
*When I got out of surgery and was so uncomfortable and in pain my first thought when I got home was wow it is nice to have a break. I knew as soon as I got out of surgery that I could have my life back again. What a blessing! I barely know what to do with myself, all my new found energy and words. Oh how I missed words. My brain was so broken when I was sick, MAJOR creative, major everything block. Apologies if my posts didn't make sense or our conversations hahaha just a casualty of being sick. Your brain is focusing so hard on getting better that there isn't much room for anything else as those around me constantly reminded me.
Please see previous post about my ER visit if you are confused as to what is going on but as my surgeon said, the surgeon in the ER just wanted to send you to a better one that knew what was happening haha We always learn things through trials. In my case ALWAYS GET A SECOND OPINION. OR A THIRD OPINION. If you know that the first one doesn't make sense or feels wrong to you. DON'T GIVE UP. Being defeated is the worst feeling in the world.
That being said that is one reason why I started this company. I never want anyone to feel defeated getting ready for your day or an event, your closet or a dressing room should never do that to you. Yet so many times we are often driven to tears by that hole in the wall full of fabric, lies & sequins. A second or third opinion never hurt anyone. In my case a second opinion was the difference between life and death. Death of not being able to pursue my passions, dreams and living with a bomb inside of me that whenever it wanted would one day get set off. I know it is not always going to be that extreme but we owe it to ourselves to never have to feel defeated when there are so many resources out there.
I would be lying to you if I did not tell you that this has been a very difficult year for a variety of reasons but being able to do what I love has kept me going. It was so hard to take a break from it to focus on my health and myself but I had to if I wanted to continue to pursue my dreams of helping YOU. So let me be your second opinion or your third opinion. Don't live without hope. It's the worse state to be in. There is always hope somewhere you just have to keep looking for it.
*****Thanks for all your patience. You are so important! Appreciating today as well as what's on the horizon for CUT CHIC! ******
When I was younger we had this sizable wooden brown trunk full of dresses, heels, hats & pearls. Oh how we loved the pearls. Whether it was playing a game of Pretty Pretty Princess... you know it had that high quality synthetic cast jewelry! OR spending the afternoon with the magical trunk becoming a princess, a teacher or a pirate (Couldn't leave the brother out). That trunk full of what everyone else just viewed as aged, undesirable clothes were little girls treasures.
I feel many of us have lost this truth most days. As dressing up has turned into a chore instead of a fun way to express yourself.
So I challenge you to put on your goggles or Kate Spade glasses and try to view your closet a little differently today. Play with mixing different styles or contrasting a burnt orange top w/ a purple skirt because who says you shouldn't start each day with a dose of fun? Who says you can't love lace and leather OR stripes with a safari print? Style doesn't need to make sense it needs to express who you are.
So put on that skirt and do a twirl. Your five year old self with thank you.
Heart beating fast, the phone rings, finally with test results, they say I need to go to the ER, right now. Not giving me an option. Initially I get annoyed that yet again my health gets in the way of my plans for the evening and possibly the whole week. I mean it's usually in the way but I can ignore it. I have plans. Don't you know this body? Don't you know that I have barre tonight? Plans to go car shopping? Puppy class the next day and a much needed hair appointment? But I understand the importance and reluctantly pack up everything I may need for the unknown. While also full of excitement that they have finally figured out what has been ailing me for the past month!
All of the Doctors are convinced yet baffled by my test results. No surprise to me. This is nothing new. But FOUR Doctors, FOUR agree something needs to be done about my funny looking appendix. I wait longer and a little longer. They're talking atleast a stay in the hospital for a few days, possible surgery. But finally they change their mind after talking to a surgeon. He doesn't think it needs any attention at all, forget everything that everyone else says. A complete change of plans. So they send me home. A once hopeful girl's faith is crushed, demolished, that she'll ever get to feel better again. But she tries not to lose faith as faith is the key to getting answers someday and not accepting defeat.
See I often wish that I was a doctor that I could figure out my own symptoms, analyze test results, be able to research and find answers and make sure that others don't have to experience what I have for so may years at hospitals but as much as I consider it I know that it is not what I am called to do. While I'm beyond passionate about helping people I can't even watch them take my blood let alone look at a broken bone. As I was especially reminded while watching the Cavs last night. Instead, I am called to help you. Save you time, find that real smile, cultivate that confidence within. How can I do this? With what some may view as a mundane task. STYLING. But to me it's more than that. It's looking at the hundreds of details just like they do in the hospital, but my office just so happens to be in a closet instead of a sterile white hallway with awkward paintings. Helping prepare you for whatever curveball life may throw at you that day. Because the curveballs they will always come even when you feel it shouldn't be baseball season.
Taking one thing off your list to worry about. Confirming that you are gorgeous and letting that shine through. The way you look is just an addition to the glow and smile that we are really searching for. Easing the anxiety whether it is social, meeting your sig. others family, braving that interview, OR embracing your new body your little one gifted you. We put our bodies through so much, the least we could do is love them back the way they are. Because in the end- When we create beautiful things- like the perfect outfit- we inspire beautiful people- Valerie Mayen said this at the Yellow Cake Shop fashion show I attended and it stuck with me.
So while I will never be a medical surgeon I CAN be your fashion surgeon. Not just a doctor, no because they don't have the last say. I can be your expert. I can dissect your wardrobe and tell you the cure it needs. Be your final say. Eliminate frustration and save you time as well as money in the long run. That is my passion, helping YOU.
P.S Who designed hospital gowns? They could really use an update...
I know most of you would never think that outfits are based on science, math w/ a side of hearty art but they are. Embracing your shape is all about proportions and drawing attention to certain aspects to make an outfit balance but these are all only guidelines and not rules hence the mix of hard science and math w/ Art! Does Fashion have rules though? Nope. Fashion tends to take after the Pirates of the Caribbean mantra. The Fashion code is more like guidelines than actual rules!
If we're all honest with ourselves style is something you have to face everyday whether you enjoy it or not. It's a shame that this thing we have to do everyday is something that most of us have never had classes on to learn the foundations of! You can either spend time initially so you don't have to spend time later or spend time later in frustration and extra time being unsure of yourself every morning.
ITS NOT ABOUT CLOTHES IT'S ABOUT FINDING YOUR CONFIDENCE & JOY. It's about having your inside match your outside, it's about saving time & making those first impressions count. Whether you want to or not everyday you have to make first impressions because you will always see someone new.
A FEW FASHION GUIDELINES!
Here are a few tips to consider to make that arch nemesis piece your new fave!
1. Create a V-neck- Now this doesn't mean you always have to buy only v-necklines at all! Add a pendant necklace to create that v-shape or embrace the cold shoulder trend. To create an opposite V. There is a reason the trend has taken off! PRO TIP: Look for more of a L-shape cut out if you find cold shoulder tops to not be flattering on you. Scarves are also great for lending a helping hand. Or the next time you are out shopping look for a print that accents that v-shape!
2. Belt it- or find styles that draw attention to your waist. Thank the trend forecasting peeps this year for this actually being on trend! Makes it way more easier to find while out shopping!
3. Say hello to mom jeans- Ahem I mean high waisted fabulousness! Because thankfully the high waisted denim of today are nothing like the denim of the 80's! They have come a long way! Hello 4-way stretch spandex. Tucking in your favorite basic tee/tank with a cardigan over top will draw attention to your waist to give your outfit the look you know its been missing but couldn't put your finger on.
4. Layer with a structured jacket- Not just great for the men in your life! & Who ever thought cold weather could be your new best friend? A greatly made jacket will tailor in at the waist and flow out slightly to accentuate your shape. Even the casual cargo jackets of the season tend to have a string you can tighten to achieve this!
5. Balance Shape- Yeah we hear it all the time. But what does it actually mean? For example, it means that since it is sweater weather and those cozy sweaters tend to bulkier, balancing out your bottom half with a legging or skinny jean. Yes I promise you can pull them off. It means that embracing the midi skirt trend of the season that is oh so chic is balanced with a structured button down or lightweight tucked in sweater.
Disclaimer: Remember though these are just tips not hard fast rules. THERE ARE NO RULES IN FASHION. Thats what makes it so fun!
Empowered women empower women.
Thats what we here at Cut Chic believe.
This is something I have been looking a lot at lately, as well as trying to define what this looks like. I seem to continue to encounter women who believe the opposite. You know the type... the ones who will throw you under that sale rack at Nordstrom so they can get that last pair of Prada heels on sale without batting an eye? Ok. So maybe you've never seen them do that but you know they would if they had the chance figuratively speaking.
Those that just view you only as competition; not a human, a friend, acquaintance, co-worker, family member or whatever it may be. Somehow, someway you might get in their way to get ahead in this dog eat dog world. How dare you. While I personally believe God has a plan for everyone and puts people in your life to grow you or steer you in a better direction. Can we just talk about how un-needed this petty competition is?
Now a little friendly competition obviously never hurt anyone don't get me wrong. But can we keep it to Mario Kart and Barre class? (Um, you are so going down when we play Mario Kart FYI) But I'm talking about the rip you with my words, suppress your success, throw you under a bus type of competition.
This past Saturday as I volunteered and watched the leader of the event get chewed and spit out by a woman for no reason at all. She simply just ignored it as she understood that the woman was going through a lot in her life. She handled it with such class and seamless effort. Her brutal words did not merit a reply clearly, which is exactly how she responded. She listened intently but sometimes the best thing to say is nothing at all. Such a beautiful representation to not let the people who feel the need to tear you apart, bring you down.
In case you're wondering we can all succeed together! Just because I succeed does not mean you can't. I promise there is room for all of us here, we all bring our own set of strengths to the table, whether the same position or not. Don't sell yourself so short. If anything other women should be supporting other women in all aspects of life.
So be a Dare Devil, don't be scared to go after you want and conquer the world but don't be a Devil Wears Prada to get there.
Go after that job, that dream, that outfit you never thought you could wear but why don't you bring a friend along for the journey rather than go at it by yourself. I promise it'll be more fun and less lonely at the top with all the other women there sparkling with you.
Mario Kart, Balloons & Bananas,
Even Fashion Stylists have off days.
I just want to be real with you today. I mean in a world of Pinterest, fashion bloggers galore with the perfect hot off the runway outfits, hair, instastories & contouring I thought you could use a dose of realness to relate to. Here it is. Somedays it is way easier for me to dress someone else than myself. Yep I said it. It's so easy for me to get tunnel vision and get stuck in my head. My bedroom floor indeed turns into a sea of clothes that I don't want to wear just like yours does every now and then. Especially because the way you see yourself can be so far off some days.
I mean it's always easier to give advice than take it yourself right? You and I both know that all too well if we are honest with ourselves.
For the past few months I have been drooling over the suede thigh high boots all over Pinterest. Love me a new shoe style ESPECIALLY a boot. Hello Autumn and pumpkin and apple and candles and blankets and all the basic things. No shame. And I mean a thigh high boot is like a legging and a boot in one! What could be better?!? Two of my favorite things in one! It's not like a tank/cardigan combo or those tops with the mock turtleneck sewed in that Stewart wears on Big Bang Theory... this is indeed a fabulous combination! Thank you 70's fashion for coming around full circle again. As I played around with what to wear with these marvelous boots though, I was struggling to find that perfect balance of casual style vs. looking like I was about to head to the club and break it down, which I do love dancing the night away but I also wanted to look appropriate for the atmosphere. It's not that I don't know what to wear with the boots... because I do...I mean I do it for a living... Everyday- 8 hours a day notes after notes of advice to others etc. I follow all the latest trends, read the blogs even hang out with Who What Wear and Vogue on occasion... That is on Instagram or the local Heinen's grocery store check out line. I'm still waiting for their new office to open in Cleveland. Hey a girl can dream.
Anywho, as I started playing with styles I started to get a tad worried about how I'd come across when I wore these boots as it is a tad easy to give off let's just say not the vibe I was looking for. Aka Fashion Faux Pas instead of seasoned stylist.
I love trying new things, new styles but I too sometimes get hesitant to rock it especially since I don't exactly live in the fashion capital of the world where I already often look way over-dressed on a daily basis. But that's just who I am. As I explained to a friend the other day that within my personal style I struggle to dress down and enjoy casual styles. They looked at me like I was crazy as they should. Now don't get me wrong I can tell you ALL day long how to rock those joggers and make them more casual or edgy or girly or boho whatever your style is, but casual is just not my style when I really want it to be sometimes. Just like casual is not my style you need to remember that if dressing up is not yours, embrace that. You can look stylish and fashionable with any look that is you, I promise.
I LOVE to take my sister shopping with me when I get in a rut or when we need someone to confide in, like as to why no one sells a basic black cardigan when I need one or why the cashiers always ask if you found everything ok when actuality they wouldn't know what to do if you said no. When you find that person who will give you their honest opinion while trying clothes on while out shopping and not just appease you, keep them and never let go. Thankfully she's my sister so she's stuck with me. A second opinion never hurt anyone. AND remember that even fashion stylists have their off days. So don't get discouraged when you have one. Don't give up! Just take a deep breath and put on those boots. Oh and I did end up wearing those boots that day and a few compliments and dirty looks later I'm glad I did. WHAT TRENDS/STYLES HAVE YOU BEEN DYING TO TRY???
Boots, beats & jams,
